Care for the land while releasing some steam!
Join us for this special Saturday workday to help us steward a crucial piece of land sandwiched between the Little Tennessee River and Wiggins Creek. Our main tasks for the day will be demolishing three small sheds and cleaning up trash and scrap metal that is scattered around the property, which is located within the Needmore Game Lands. The Needmore is an over-5,000 acre chunk of public land that encompasses a fascinating array of rich, low-elevation habitats, including 30 miles of river frontage. Mainspring has conserved over 3,000 acres within the Needmore, and we continue to carry on the legacy of protecting this area’s unparalleled beauty and biodiversity. When the Fontana Dam was installed in the 1940’s, it flooded what would have been the lowest elevation ecosystems of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and many other low-elevation areas in the Little Tennessee River watershed have been developed. The Needmore is a special swath of unfragmented habitat that is not well-represented in our landscape, and Mainspring is excited to have the opportunity to restore this unique piece of it to pristine condition.
We will meet at 145 Wiggins Creek Road, Bryson City, NC 28713 just before 9:00am on Saturday, March 22nd. See map below for exact location. This workday will run until around 4:00pm. Lunch will be provided to volunteers who attend for the full workday (food specifics coming soon.) Please bring plenty of water, work gloves (if you have them), and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. We also recommend bringing long sleeves and pants, warm layers, sun and bug protection, and anything else you will need to be comfortable outside for the duration of this event. There are no facilities on this property, including bathrooms. To register for this workday, fill out the form below.
