Learn about the winter birds in your backyard while helping scientists track bird populations!
During this walk, Mainspring, Birders of the Tuckaseegee Watershed, and the Franklin Bird Club will guide participants in contributing to the Great Backyard Bird Count, a global community science project that helps researchers understand how birds are doing before they undertake their great spring migration. We will begin this event with a brief intro to the Great Backyard Bird Count initiative and e-Bird app, then set off walking along the Jackson County Greenway to see what birds we can find! Along the way, local birders will help us identify the birds we hear and see as we hone our birding skills. Participants who contribute to the Great Backyard Bird Count after this walk on their own time will receive a free embroidered patch!
This event is free and open to the public, including beginner birders, families, and folks with mobility concerns. We will meet at the trailhead of the Jackson County Greenway (342 Old Cullowhee Rd, Sylva, NC 28779) at 9am on Saturday, February 17th, and arrive back at the trailhead at or before 11am. The Jackson County Greenway is a 1-mile paved path that is accessible to mobility devices and strollers, and is mostly flat. Total distance covered during this event will be 2 miles or less, and restrooms are available at the trailhead. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing, and bring a water bottle as well as any additional tools you may want (such as binoculars, field guides, etc.) Birders of the Tuckaseegee Watershed will provide a few pairs of extra binoculars for those who don’t have their own. This event is weather-dependent. Email Skye with any questions.
To register for this event, fill out the form below, then grab your binos and get ready to be a community scientist!
We highly encourage interested parties visit the Great Backyard Bird Count website to learn how you can become a community scientist on your own time and contribute your data to this global count. Birders of the Tuckaseegee Watershed holds semi-regular birding walks in the Sylva area, we hope to see you at the next one!
