Protect drinking water and brook trout habitat in the Tuckasegee Watershed
Mull Creek is a pristine, cold water tributary of Caney Fork Stream, which flows into the Tuckasegee River. This high-elevation stream is important native brook trout habitat as well as a source of drinking water for Jackson County, but its water quality is threatened by a dump site that contains old tires, plastics, and other junk. Join Mainspring, WATR, and the Forest Service and help us clean up this site and provide high quality water to all, from humans to fish.
This workday will run from about 10:00am-2:00pm, or until all litter is removed. Snacks and tools will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their reusable water bottles; we will have a refill station and single-use bottles for those without their own. This site is accessed from a steep slope, and volunteers will encounter uneven ground during the cleanup. There are a variety of tasks available, from picking up litter with grabbers to unearthing half-buried tires to helping move large items to the dumpster.
We request volunteers arrive at 10:00am on Friday, November 3rd. Parking is available on the side of Caney Fork Rd right before it turns to gravel, approximately 10 miles up. There are additional parking opportunities. A staff member will be stationed where the asphalt turns to gravel to help direct parking. Please carpool if possible.
