EXPLORE YOUR BACKYARD WITH MAINSPRING AND THE MACON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
Take a casual 1 mile stroll with a naturalist to revel in the delights of spring! Join Skye as we amble through a meadow, along Cartoogechaye Creek, and in a mixed oak forest, learning about and appreciating our wild neighbors along the way. This trail is sprinkled with wildflowers throughout the growing season; on this day we may be treated to shy mayapple blossums, delightful ephemeral trilliums, clusters of yarrow flowers, tulip poplar blooms, and more! We will discuss identification tips, wildlife benefits, and other interesting notes like edibility or medicinal uses.
This event is free and open to the public, and registration is not required to attend. Just bring yourself, your water bottle, and your curiosity! We’ll meet in the fireplace/living room space in the library just before 5:30pm on Friday, May 9th, then hit the trails. The walk will take about two hours and is on a variety of trails, from the narrow and sloped mountain biking trails behind the library to the wide and flat Little Tennessee River Greenway.
For questions, email Skye. Please leave pets at home. This event is weather-dependent.
MEET YOUR NATURALIST
As Mainspring’s Conservation Outreach Director, Skye Cahoon inspires people to connect with their local landscape and value the conservation efforts that protect it. As a kid, she could often be found climbing trees, hunting for salamanders, or chasing fish at her local swimming hole. Her passion for nature grew with her, and in 2020 she earned her Zoology B.S. from the University of Maine. Integrating her experience in wildlife research with her excitement about the natural world, Skye now strives to make science fun and accessible. She leads a variety of educational programs here at Mainspring, and enjoys continuing to learn about the creatures that call the Southern Appalachians home.
